Linda Masarira, the spokesperson of the protesters, told NewZimbabwe.com in Harare that police arrested her male colleagues, including Patson Dzamara, on allegations of robbery early Thursday.
More than 15 people from various youth NGOs have, since the 1st of June, been staying and sleeping at the Africa Unity Square, demanding the restoration of human rights and the safe return of Itai Dzamara, who was abducted by suspected state security agents in March last year.
Itai, who was abducted from a barbershop in his Glenview home area, in Harare, where he was having a haircut, started his solo anti-President Robert Mugabe protests at the Africa Unity Square, before he was joined by other pro-democracy youths.
According to Masarira, the arrested are Patson Dzamara, Makomborero Haruzivishe, Pride Mkono, Oliver Chikumba and Tatenda Mombeyarara.
“Three police officers had earlier tried to disperse us and we told them they had no constitutional right to do so and after 20minutes of heated argument with them they walked away.
“After midnight two women showed up walking towards us from the corner Third Street and Jason Moyo Avenue, they passed us and stopped at a distance and inquired where 4th Street was purporting to have disembarked a Kombi from Murehwa.
“I told them to go where they were going as I thought they had bad intentions,” she said.
Masarira added, “The two women came back running screaming mbavha mbavha (thieves thieves) and we just watched them as they ran past us. Instead of going straight towards Jason Moyo they cut across the park into the dark and we saw three policemen emerging from behind the hedge. The women accused Patson and Makomborero Haruzivishe of following them and taking their filthy, torn Tshangani bags”.
National police spokesperson, Charity Charamba, could not be reached for comment.
