The former workers who were dismissed sometime last year under allegedly unfair circumstances and have salary arrears dating back to as far as 2014 are camped outside the GMB premises without any ablution or water facilities. They are also sleeping in the open including women with young children as they exercise their right to demonstrate and petition. The current living conditions violates their right to human dignity.
The Forum calls upon the GMB to respect the Constitution which clearly states that every person has the right to fair and safe labour practices and standards; and to be paid a fair and reasonable wage. The GMB management should therefore engage the workers as a matter of urgency to find an amicable solution.
There is urgent need for the GMB management to resolve the prevailing labour dispute in order to ensure that the affected former workers are able to enjoy an adequate standard of living.
